#52: National Water Programme

Description

The aim of the National Water Programme is to provide an overarching framework to strengthen the protection of water resources from deterioration and pollution, and which ensures the sustainable use of available resources.

Function

Measures within the Water Programme can include institutional measures such as developing an appropriate legislative environment to coordinate multiple water uses, capacity building measures as well as technical measures such as water resource quality monitoring and the adoption of advanced technology for treatment and water reuse.

Example: The National Water Program in Mongolia

In Mongolia, a national program was established to protect water resources from deterioration and pollution and to efficiently access and use available water resources. The framework establishes networks for the monitoring of freshwater quality (with the employment of new technologies when applicable), which identifies current sources for potable water to be distributed to households. The improvement of water supply for the industry and agriculture is oriented towards sustainable development.
In order to erect a solid framework, the country is committed to the development of a legislative and institutional environment that is centered around capacity building and coordinating the heterogeneous requirements for water use.
