Description
Flood risk management plans explain the risk of flooding from rivers, the sea, surface water, groundwater and reservoirs. The plans set out how organisations, stakeholders and communities will work together to manage flood risk.
Function
Flood risk management plans are e.g. implemented via the EU Floods Directive. The objectives must focus on reducing the adverse consequences of flooding for human health, the environment, cultural heritage and economic activities.
Example: Flood Management Risk Plan of the Emscher Catchment
Objectives of the Emscher Flood Risk Management Plan, which is part of the Flood Risk Management Plan Rhine, include the preservation of retention areas, prevention of settlement activity in flood plains and the improvement of the natural water balance. Measures of the plan include the consideration of flood risks in state and regional planning as well as the adaptation of land use to flood risks (through measures in agriculture, forestry, floodplain renaturation, reactivation of retention areas, rainwater management).
