The environment can be affected heavily by implementation of river related construction work. The requirement for a ecological construction supervision can be included within the approval for large projects or projects in sensitive areas.
The objective is to monitor the requirements from an environmental perspective, especially the coordination between nature protection and . Ecological construction supervision can also be implemented on a voluntary basis.

During the execution phase of construction projects, serious environmental damage can occur. For this reason, particularly in the case of larger projects or those in sensitive areas, appropriate conditions will be set at the time of authorisation and ecological monitoring of construction may be required. The task of ecological construction monitoring is to monitor the conditions imposed from an environmental perspective. Partly stipulated in collateral clauses/condition of the permit/planning approval decision, partly voluntarily implemented by the Emschergenosschenschaft, a cooperatively organised water board in the Emscher Catchment, Germany.
